My diabetic cat who also has CRF occasionally throws up his Azodyl meds, even an hour after it is administered. I read somewhere (can't find the site now) that there are alternatives for Azodyl. Can you help me?

From the link:
I can honestly tell you that in my experience as a practicing holistic veterinarian for over 20 years there is absolutely no proof, publication or clinical data showing that Azodyl does anything at all to benefit your dogs kidneys!
Today, Board Certified Veterinary Internal Medicine Specialists, including the kidney vets at the Dialysis Center for Pets at UC Davis have replaced it with Aluminum Hydroxide (ALOH) based agents. The ALOH effectively lowers excess phosphorus and calcium blood with no adverse side effects.
The Azodyl is a mixture of only 3 strains of "friendly bacteria"; which are also known as probiotics. For example, organic yogurt also contains probiotics. According to current information available directly from the manufacturer of Azodyl, not only are there no published kidney benefits, it appears that the majority of 3 strains of their "friendly bacteria" are dead before you ever open the bottle.

I've not found it to be particularly effective, so I wouldn't push it if your cat won't hold it down. One of the phosphate binders might be more palatable and more effective.
Talk with your vet about the issue, see if he/she has any alternatives. What you do should be specifically guided by the blood values. Be sure to have the blood pressure monitored as well.
What diet are you feeding?Dr. Gus

Azodyl for renal failure in my cat
Azodyl has done wonders for my cat Coco. I give him one pill twice a day (which he tolerates fine with no side effects), I sprinkle Epakatin in his wet food and also administer 100ml of fluids (LR) subcutaneously once a day and his renal function has improved dramatically as evidenced by his lab studies. I am a very happy camper and hope to keep my 16.5 year old baby with me for many more years!

Hi KarenA!
I too am a KarenA! How funny! Thanks for replying to my post and I will definitely share some Coco stories soon and perhaps some pictures as well. He is a gorgeous Blue Point Siamese with an absolutely adorable personality! He's my buddy and I want to keep him around for as long as I can and that is why I joined this forum - to perhaps learn some new ways of doing so! Thank you to every one of the wonderful kitty lovers on this website for your wonderful insights, information, knowledge and support!

I love Meezers!! My Stella is a Snowshoe, which is a Siamese mix. She's chatty, passionate, very Siamese in her personality (that's her in my Avatar, as a tiny kitten. Now she's much darker with classic points and white toes and white socks on her back legs as well as a cute white stripe down her nose).Karen A/Publicist
