Well, the funny thing (not funny ha-ha) is that I've been having separate problems with Internet Explorer. It keeps crashing as soon as I start it. If I shut down and restart, sometimes it works again, but the fix doesn't "take." Right now I'm posting with IE, and everything is working as it should be.

Maybe you should download a new copy of IE?? It sounds like something's gotten corrupted.

I did reinstall IE. It crashed as soon as I started it up.
At the moment, Firefox is working fine with this forum, but IE is crashing when I start it up again. Earlier today it was the opposite. I can't spot the circumstances where one is working or not working.

Hmm. We were having similar trouble at one point where IE and Firefox, which we typically run simultaneously, were interfering with each other somehow. Do you have both browsers open at the same time?

Not usually, no. I have, from time to time, since this trouble started, as I try to see which one is working at the moment.

I'm almost afraid to say this, but the problems with the forum and Firefox have disappeared again.
After a bit of experimentation today, I've verified that Internet Explorer will run when my laptop is docked, but not when it isn't.
The one change that I made just before this started was upgrading Avanquest System Suite from version 8 to version 10. I have tried reinstalling IE, but this hasn't fixed the problem.
My laptop is an IBM Thinkpad X31. I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP-3.
Any ideas? (Why am I asking this on a Pet Forum?)

I wonder if there's some firewall that is interfering with the operation of the browser?

At this point, I couldn't rule it out. I would have thought that a firewall would just prevent the browser from connecting, not make it crash as soon as it started.
